Tampa boy fighting leukemia while raising funds for bone marrow registry
Oldsmar, FL February 26, 2007 bd’s Mongolian Grill is pleased to host the First Annual Driving for Donors Guest Griller Dinner on Sunday, March 25th . The Tampa Bay Ligntning’s Nolan Pratt and Senator Mike Fasano will be among the celebrities behind the grill cooking while 11-year old Pat Patreja raises awareness about the need for bone marrow donors.

Pat is in his eighth month of chemotherapy for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Shortly after a friend died while waiting for a bone marrow match, the 6th grader conceived the idea of “Driving for Donors”. All proceeds from the March 25th dinner will help fund Pat’s three-month, thirty-city nationwide tour.
70% of people who need a bone marrow transplant won’t be able to find a match within their own family and must rely on the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) registry to find a matching donor. Donating blood is free. However, to be tested for the bone marrow registry, the donor must pay $52 for the tissue typing.
Pat recently made national news by selling sponsorship ad space on his bald head to raise money to cover that cost. Sponsors will be able to host their own events in each city on the tour while Pat encourages more donors to register.
